Last-Hole Drama Decides Rocket Mortgage Classic

SUB 60 HEADLINES

Cam Davis claimed his second Rocket Mortgage Classic title at Detroit Golf Club, shooting a final-round 70 to finish at 18-under 270. The Australian's victory came unexpectedly when 22-year-old leader Akshay Bhatia three-putted the final hole, missing a crucial 4-foot par putt that would have forced a playoff.

Bhatia's stumble ended his bid for a third PGA Tour title, but his overall performance, including a 54-hole bogey-free run, showcased his rising talent. He finished in a four-way tie for second with Davis Thompson, Min Woo Lee, and Aaron Rai. Davis, crediting recent work with a hypnotherapist, secured the win after a birdie on the 17th hole put him level with Bhatia.
The tournament also saw drama from last week’s “Mr. 59”, Cameron Young, who broke his driver shaft late in the round and couldn't replace it, finishing sixth. As Davis celebrated his return to the winner's circle, Bhatia remained optimistic about his strong play, looking ahead to The Open Championship.
BLAND’S GRAND STAND
England's Richard Bland captured the 44th U.S. Senior Open at Newport Country Club on Monday, July 1, 2024. Bland edged out Japan's Hiroyuki Fujita in a tense four-hole playoff after both finished regulation at 13-under par.
Bland's clutch par from a greenside bunker on the final playoff hole sealed his win, adding his name to the list of champions at this venerable venue.

The victory marks Bland's second senior major of the year, following his Senior PGA Championship win in May. Fujita led for most of the tournament, impressing with near-perfect accuracy off the tee. Weather delays pushed the final round into Monday.
Australia's Richard Green took third place at 12-under, while Steve Stricker finished at 10-under.

Yes, you read that correctly. Miles Russell, a 15-year-old golfer from Jacksonville Beach, Florida, competed in the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic this past weekend. Russel became the ninth-youngest player in PGA Tour history. Although he didn't make the cut, Russell's rounds of 74 and 70 were still commendable (and let’s be honest, better than the majority of adults out there).
Despite Russell not making the cut, his performance was still noteworthy, especially considering his young age and limited professional experience. His previous achievements include being the youngest to make the cut in a Korn Ferry Tour event and nearly qualifying for the Puerto Rico Open. Fans will get a chance to see the young player again in the PGA Tour's Butterfield Bermuda Championship in November.
Bickering about birdies? It seems our eagles have landed far from the nest.
