Chris Gotterup claimed his third PGA Tour victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii, firing a closing 64 to win by two strokes at 16-under. The 26-year-old New Jersey native pocketed $1,638,000 and delivered one of the weekend’s most emotional moments—breaking down in tears on the 18th green at Waialae Country Club. Gotterup made clutch birdies on 12, 13, and 17 to pull away from the field, joining elite company as just the sixth player since 2024 to win three or more Tour events. Davis Riley entered Sunday with a two-shot lead and birdied five of his first five holes before an epic collapse—going bogey-bogey-double on holes 6-8 to fall out of contention. Meanwhile, 62-year-old Vijay Singh made his first PGA Tour cut since the 2020 Memorial, finishing T40 at 5-under and outplaying stars half his age.Starting the final round two shots behind leader Davis Riley, Gotterup seized control as Riley faltered.
He built momentum with a front-nine 3-under 32, birdieing holes 2, 3, 7, and 9.The back nine proved decisive in breezy conditions: he holed a 20-foot birdie on No. 12, then drained a 25-foot birdie on the tough par-4 13th (the field's hardest hole). These clutch putts, paired with elite driving (leading strokes gained off the tee), created separation. He added a birdie on the par-3 17th after a precise tee shot, closing with a 6-under 64 (seven birdies, one bogey) and earning $1.638 million plus a jump to No. 17 in the world rankings.
This win means everything to Gotterup. After plummeting to No. 195 in the world last year, he’s now climbed to No. 17 with victories at the 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic, 2025 Scottish Open (where he beat Rory McIlroy head-to-head), and now Hawaii. His tearful post-round interview said it all: “It’s been crazy. I’ve got a great team. Everyone at home—I can’t get through this part every time.”
NEXT ON THE TEE: THE AMERICAN EXPRESS
The Tour heads to the California desert for The American Express at PGA West in La Quinta. The big story? Scottie Scheffler finally makes his 2026 debut after The Sentry’s cancellation pushed his season opener. Sepp Straka returns as defending champion. With a $9.2 million purse and the world No. 1 in the field, expect fireworks.
