Hideki Celebrates Genesis Invitational Win (Harry How / Golf Digest)
Despite starting six strokes behind leader Patrick Cantlay on Sunday morning, Hideki Matsuyama delivered a near-perfect final round — helping him claim his ninth PGA Tour victory. The impressive 9-under 62 final round at The Riviera Country Club was one stroke shy of the course record set by Ted Tryba in 1999.
The win for the marks a significant milestone for the 2021 Masters Champion, as he surpasses K.J. Choi for the most PGA Tour wins by an Asian-born player. This victory, coupled with 700 FedExCup points, propels Matsuyama to third place in the FedExCup standings, and places him back in the top 20 of the official world golf rankings.
TIGER’S FRI DAY BLUES
Influenza, back spasms, and shanks were not the words golf fans wanted to associate with Tiger Woods’ first return to competition since last April when he withdrew from the Masters, but unfortunately that was the reality this weekend at the Genesis Invitational. Tiger, the playing host at the event, developed flu-like symptoms Thursday evening after finishing his first round where viewers witnessed an incredibly rare shanked approach shot on the 18th. He gave it go Friday morning, but was ultimately carted off mid-round to receive treatment for his symptoms and was forced to withdraw.
All eyes were on Tiger and his new clothing line, Sun Day Red, as he debuted the new brand in action, but with only one and a half rounds of air time, it was not the debut tiger fans had hoped for. It was an unfamiliar sight for fans to see the new Sun Day Red tiger logo replacing the classic swoosh, or even his trade marked TW logo for which he says he’s “moved on” from — but fans will have to wait for Tiger’s next event to hopefully get a chance to see Tiger in his final round Sunday red again.
FULL SWING SEASON 2 COMING SOON 🗓️
Season 2 of the Netflix hit series, Full Swing, will be released on March 6th. After a drama-filled 2023 season, season 2 seems to be quite promising for fans of the show. The teaser below seems to indicate that the Ryder Cup and LIV/PGA merger talks will be a focus in season 2 — while new faces Tom Kim and Wyndham Clark will also make their appearance.
