McIlroy's Magic and Amateur Heroics

Irish Open playoff triumph and USA's Walker Cup dominance highlight quiet pro weekend

SUB 60 HEADLINES

Most professional tours were dark this weekend, creating an unusual quiet period between the PGA Tour playoffs conclusion and fall season kickoff. The LPGA Tour sits between events while LIV Golf's season ended in August. This scheduling gap amplified the drama from amateur golf and European action.

Rory McIlroy ended his post-Masters drought in spectacular fashion, capturing his second Irish Open title in a thrilling playoff at The K Club. The Northern Irishman made a special trip to compete in his home country's DP World Tour event, overcoming a four-shot deficit with a clutch 28-foot eagle putt on 72 to force extra holes, then defeated Sweden's Joakim Lagergren on the third playoff hole when his opponent found water. McIlroy earned €1.02 million from the €6 million purse and his fourth worldwide victory of 2025. His homecoming victory carries significant Ryder Cup implications, providing ideal momentum heading into crucial preparation tournaments.

Thomas Bjørn claimed his first individual PGA Tour Champions title at the Stifel Charity Classic in St. Louis. The 54-year-old Danish legend and former European Ryder Cup captain defeated Australia's Cameron Percy in a playoff after both finished at 12-under par, earning $315,000 from the $2.1 million purse with a clutch birdie putt.

AMATEUR HOUR

Team USA dominated the 50th Walker Cup 17-9 at Cypress Point Club, claiming their fifth consecutive victory. High schooler Mason Howell delivered the shot of the weekend with a walk-off eagle hole-out from 147 yards to clinch his foursomes match, creating an instant viral moment. Bryson DeChambeau made a surprise Saturday appearance, delivering a motivational speech that energized the American team.

COMING ATTRACTIONS

The Procore Championship (September 11-14) kicks off the FedExCup Fall at Silverado Resort in Napa Valley, featuring 10 of 12 US Ryder Cup team members including world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. The $6 million event carries heightened stakes with full exempt status now limited to the top 100 players. Defending champion Patton Kizzire returns to a field missing Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau.

The BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England represents the DP World Tour's flagship $9 million event, where most of Luke Donald's European Ryder Cup team will compete just 17 days before Bethpage Black.
