Nick Taylor drains 72-foot putt to win RBC Canadian Open in playoff
June 13, 2023
SUB 60 HEADLINES
Nick Taylor made history on Sunday, becoming the first Canadian golfer since 1954 to win the RBC Canadian Open. It came in dramatic fashion, with Taylor edging out Tommy Fleetwood in a 5-hole playoff. Taylor drained a 72-foot eagle putt to finally secure the victory, marking his 3rd career victory on the PGA tour and first this season. The win also launches Taylor into 6th place in the FedEx Cup Playoff Standings.
The win was so exciting for the home Canadian crowd, that even PGA golfer (and fellow Canadian) Adam Hadwin got in on the celebration, rushing the green after the epic putt and getting tackled by security (pictured above). While we hope Adam didn’t get injured, what we really want to know is if the security guard has heard from any NFL teams yet? His tackling form was on point.
In the end, the Canadian Open provided pure golf drama, but the biggest news of the week actually broke earlier Tuesday morning when it was announced that the PGA Tour will be merging with the Saudi-backed rival tour LIV Golf, as well as the DP Tour (European Tour). 🤯 The news left the golf world temporarily speechless, and then everyone started talking ...
SO WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE WORLD OF GOLF?
Here’s what we know so far in regards to the merger…
A new “framework agreement” has the PGA, DP World Tour, and LIV combining assets to create a new for-profit entity (entity name is TBD) where current PGA Commissioner, Jay Monahan will be CEO.
All pending litigation between PGA and LIV will be dropped.
Golfers who left the PGA for LIV will be able to reapply for membership on the PGA tour (what that full process looks like, is another question).
Deal was done in secrecy with no PGA or LIV players involved (yes, not even Rory or Tiger).
Many strong emotions felt across golfers, fans, and everyone in-between.
And here’s what we don’t know….(Pretty much everything 😅 )
Will LIV continue to exist?
Will 54-hole, no cut, team-structured events be added to the schedule?
When will changes officially take place?
Will “loyal” PGA players be rewarded for staying with PGA?
Why the merger and why now?

COURSE OF THE WEEK

A rugged barranca fronts the green of the demanding par-4 second hole at LACC. (John Mummert/USGA)
All eyes will be on the West Coast this week as the U.S. Open begins on Thursday at The Los Angeles Country Club. The course will be a grueling test for the pros, and features steep ravines and gulleys to manage throughout. And of course, what would a U.S. Open be without DEEP rough? There will be plenty of that too:
Giving the people what they want.
Cheers to the unofficial start of #USOpen week!
