Scheffler's Sixth Sense

World No. 1 edges Ben Griffin in Napa thriller while Hull ends three-year LPGA drought

SUB 60 HEADLINES

Scottie Scheffler did what Scottie Scheffler does – win golf tournaments. The world No. 1 captured his sixth victory of 2025 at the Procore Championship, edging Ben Griffin by one stroke after a dramatic final-hole miss from Griffin. Scheffler finished at -19 (269) to earn $1.08 million from the $6 million purse, marking his 19th career PGA Tour victory.

The real drama unfolded on Silverado Resort's 18th green, where Griffin needed birdie to force a playoff. His approach left him 60 feet from the pin, and while his eagle attempt rolled to five feet, the subsequent birdie putt caught the left lip. Game over. Amateur Jackson Koivun stole headlines by tying for fourth at -16, becoming the first amateur to lead after any round in tournament history.

Meanwhile, Charley Hull ended her three-year LPGA victory drought at the Kroger Queen City Championship, winning by one stroke at -20 (268) after world No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul four-putted the final hole for bogey.

RYDER CUP WARM-UP

Scheffler's victory comes at perfect timing – exactly two weeks before the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. The American has now won six times in 2025, joining Tiger Woods as the only players with six-plus wins in consecutive seasons since 1983. His dominance extends beyond wins: Scheffler has finished top-eight in his last 15 tournaments and earned over $27.6 million this year.

The Europeans got their own confidence boost from several confirmed Ryder Cup team members at the BMW PGA Championship during LIV's off-season. Viktor Hovland, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Tyrrell Hatton all tied for fifth at -15, while Jon Rahm finished T13 and Rory McIlroy and Ludvig Åberg both tied for 20th. Eleven of Luke Donald's 12-man roster competed at Wentworth before their crucial scouting trip to Bethpage Black.

LOOKING AHEAD

No PGA Tour event this week as players take a strategic break before Ryder Cup preparations intensify. The European team will conduct their scouting trip to Bethpage Black following the BMW PGA Championship, while Americans who competed in Napa focus on final tune-ups.

Captain Keegan Bradley has called this European squad "the best European team ever," setting up what could be golf's most compelling biennial showdown. The Americans hold four of the top five world ranking spots, but European grit and away-game experience shouldn't be underestimated.
