Erik van Rooyen secured his 2nd PGA tour victory during an emotional weekend for the South African Golfer at the World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico.

After learning his best friend and college roommate had been given just six weeks left to live while he battles through stage 4 melanoma, van Rooyen found the motivation to break through a major slump and sealed a victory late Sunday afternoon. With his friend’s initials on the ball he played with during the final round to help him find inspiration with each shot, van Rooyen felt the win was meant to be.

The win helps secure Van Rooyen’s standing in the FedEx Cup rankings — which allows him to spend time with his friend before he passes. Even with the win, Van Rooyen reminds us there are more important things in life.

UPDATED TGL DETAILS

The new advanced technology golf league (known as TGL and co-founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy) is gearing up for its inaugural season. The league (featuring 24 players, distributed among six founding TGL teams) will play round-robin matches on Monday and Tuesday nights, beginning on January 9 and broadcast on ESPN.

We now know that the unique format combines "Triples" and "Singles" matches, with each team having three players, totaling 15 holes in two hours. Points are earned by winning holes, and the tiebreaker at the end of the season is based on the total number of holes won.

Players will pivot from full-swing shots on the simulator to in-reality shots on the short-game area.

The TGL blends virtual and real elements, with players hitting into a virtual mega simulator screen from real fairways, tees, and rough. Real sand is used for bunker shots, and within 50 yards of the hole, the short-game area is activated, using real golf balls and customizable slopes.

TGL Golf will also incorporate the use of a shot clock, timeouts, and referees.

In case of a tie after 15 holes, the league introduces overtime, where players engage in individual shots into the screen, similar to a penalty shootout, to determine the winner. Ultimately, TGL matches are worth two points in the year-long standings race, and four of the six teams will advance to the semi-finals, culminating in a best-of-three championship series for the inaugural TGL championship.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS FINALE SET
