McIlroy's Boston Squad Claims First TGL Victory in Weekend's Only Professional Golf Action

Rory McIlroy's Boston Common Golf claimed their first-ever TGL victory Friday night, defeating Los Angeles Golf Club 7-5 at SoFi Center. The star? Twenty-four-year-old Michael Thorbjornsen, the Massachusetts native filling in for absent teammates Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama.

After dumping his very first TGL shot into a bunker (and failing to escape), Thorbjornsen staged a spectacular redemption—becoming the first player in TGL history to make four putts from outside 10 feet in a single match, including a 15-foot eagle on the final hole to clinch victory.

The McIlroy vs. Justin Rose singles matchup echoed their dramatic Masters playoff from last April, with Rory again prevailing. Boston Common joins Atlanta Drive GC (who won the Season 2 opener with Billy Horschel's heroics) as the only teams with wins so far.

QUIET START

The Sentry's October 2025 cancellation reshaped the early season calendar. Severe drought affecting over 90% of Maui County left The Plantation Course in poor condition, making the $20 million Signature Event impossible to host. Despite exploring alternative Hawaii venues, logistical constraints—shipping deadlines, tournament infrastructure, and vendor coordination—proved insurmountable.

The Sony Open in Hawaii (January 15-18) now becomes the official 2026 PGA Tour season opener, with Nick Taylor defending his title after last year's dramatic 60-foot chip-in eagle to force a playoff. It's the latest season start since 1969, and it has Hawaii golf officials meeting this week to discuss the future of professional golf in the islands.

TEED UP NEXT

The only significant professional golf this week? LIV Golf Promotions (January 8-11) at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Florida—LIV's first-ever Promotions event held stateside.

The Top 3 finishers will earn Wild Card spots into the 2026 LIV Golf League. The field includes 83 players from 24 countries competing for a $1.5 million purse ($200K to the winner). Notable names include Anthony Kim (former world No. 6 attempting to regain status after relegation), Chase Koepka (Brooks' brother), and Chris Wood.

Other upcoming action:

The LPGA's 2026 season features a record $132 million in total prize money across 33 events, with every round of every event broadcast live for the first time since 1995.
