From Cubicle to Colonial Crown

Former Loan Officer Ben Griffin Achieves Dream Win, as Scheffler Eyes Memorial Repeat

May 27, 2025

SUB 60 HEADLINES

Ben Griffin captured his first individual PGA Tour victory at the Charles Schwab Challenge, edging Matti Schmid by one shot at Colonial Country Club. The 29-year-old, who previously worked as a mortgage loan officer before returning to professional golf, finished at 12-under par to earn $1,710,000 and a spot among golf's legends on Colonial's Wall of Champions.

Griffin's dramatic final round featured an eagle-birdie start that built a commanding lead, but he needed to grind through a challenging back nine where he played 4-over par. The victory became official when Griffin sank a 4-foot putt on the 72nd hole after Schmid had chipped in from 28 feet to apply late pressure.

Griffin's path to victory represents one of golf's most inspiring comeback stories. After struggling on mini-tours, he stepped away from professional golf to work as a loan officer, supporting himself with a traditional 9-to-5 job.

Unsatisfied with office life, Griffin rededicated himself to the game and gradually worked his way back to the PGA Tour. This Colonial triumph follows his team victory at the Zurich Classic with Andrew Novak last month, but this individual win comes with all the major benefits: a Masters invitation, exempt status through 2027, and entry into this week's Memorial Tournament.

Griffin now joins an illustrious list of Colonial champions including Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Jordan Spieth, while significantly boosting his U.S. Ryder Cup team standings.

IWAI’S DOMINANT DEBUT

On the LPGA Tour, 22-year-old Chisato Iwai claimed her first professional victory in dominant fashion at the Mexico Riviera Maya Open. The Japanese rookie won by six shots at 12-under par, making five birdies in her opening six holes during Sunday's final round. Iwai's $375,000 payday makes her the third LPGA rookie to win this season, marking the first time in 10 years that three rookies have captured titles before the end of May.

MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT NEXT

The PGA Tour heads to Muirfield Village this week for the Memorial Tournament, where Scottie Scheffler will look to continue his dominant 2025 season. Scheffler's T4 finish at Colonial keeps him as the heavy favorite heading into Jack Nicklaus's signature event.
